Shaw Neighborhood Gets It's First Thai Restaurant

Finally an authentic Thai restaurant has come to the Shaw Neighborhood of Washington DC. The Shaw Neighborhood is located in the NW area of Washington DC which borders Florida Ave, U Street Corridor, Logan Circle, LeDroit Park, Howard University, and Downtown DC. The nearest metro transit is Shaw Howard University on the Yellow and Green Line.

I'm so delighted that a restaurant of this kind has finally come to our neighborhood. The Shaw area really needed this nourishing change. Eighteen years ago when I moved to the Shaw area it was full of drugs, crack alleys, abandoned homes, and prostitution. Kids ran up and down the street throwing leftover food throughout the sidewalks of the filthy carryout’s that surrounded our area.

I enjoyed the Curried Thai and Chicken Empanadas. I've never had curried chicken so good before. Instead of using coconut milk, the owner explained that she uses soy milk. The empanadas were cute, fluffy, and melted in my mouth. My mother enjoyed the Cashew Chicken and Spring Roll so much that she tried to duplicate the dish at home! The food was Delicious and we will be going back for sure!

Takeout is currently available, no credit cards are being accepted, but sit down dining will soon be on the menu. I am happy to say the restaurant is spacious, and clean. Upon entering the restaurant, I was tranquilized by the smell of the savory spices flowing like the river. I would be happy to eat here everyday if afforded. Giving that I hate plastic bags, I was happy to see eco-friendly brown paper containers and bags.

I give Beau Thai Five Stars *****

Are You A Double Dipper?

Have you ever freaked out at someone for double-dipping their chips or wings?  I remember watching an episode of Seinfeld where George was attacked by a guest at a party for double-dipping his chip.

Please click on the link below to watch this funny clip of George being attacked.

What Foods Do You Hate?

What Foods Do You Hate and Why?

I think some of the reasons why there are some foods that we hate are because we are not exposed to them, or if it doesn't look appealing to the eye we assume it's not going to satisfy our palate.  In addition to that, some of us were forced as children to eat foods we didn't like.

Last winter my mother invited me to attend her girlfriend’s birthday party on the Gold Coast of DC. The home of where the party was held was where I met a woman Cardiologist. I immediately became upset when I saw salmon, brown rice, cold vegetable salad, and an array of fruits surrounding her dining table.  One of my main reasons for attending the celebration was to indulge in some feel good foods.

Since there weren't any comfort foods like mac- n -cheese, fried chicken, potato salad, and all that good ish, I had no choice but to switch over to a healthier attitude about the whole experience. So after eating, drinking, and growing impatient to leave, I initiated a conversation with the Cardiologist about how I enjoyed the food. Yeah Right! She informed me that I should be eating asparagus everyday!! Well I love greens, spinach, beets, and all that good stuff, but I have an aversion for eating asparagus.

The Cardiologist educated me on the health benefits of eating asparagus.  Did you know that asparagus is a strong diuretic that is useful for a variety of urinary problems? It is also useful for rheumatic conditions, helping flush waste products out of the body that are accumulated in the joints.

So the next time you’re in your local grocery store, pick up a bunch of those foods you love to hate. You will be surprised at what you have been depriving of your body of.

Ghetto Gourmand

Hello and welcome to my Wednesday blog entry for Food With A Flair. Have you ever experienced exotic foods? Snails, fried lamb intestines, or pig brains? Well if ever in Chicago there is a restaurant that serves this sort of unconventional food. If you can't/won't eat certain things, this is not for you.

X-marx offers its customers a 7-15 course tasting menu made from scratch. Don’t think that you can just walk into this restaurant right off the street. How it works?  In order to get past the imaginary rope, all reservations are made online and are not complete until you receive a confirmation email. So if you are tired of the restaurant scene, sign up at http://www.xmarxchicago.com/ on a first-come first- serve basis.

If you can’t get to Chicago, this emerging trend has come to Washington, DC.  Visit
